In an interview with Empire Magazine, per a report from ComicBook, veteran make-up master and mainstay director with The Walking Dead, Greg Nicotero says he’s “proud” of the upcoming series finale.
Since the horror drama debuted on AMC in 2010, Nicotero has served as the make-up designer for both the parent series and spin-off Fear The Walking Dead), a zombie extra on multiple occasions, taken on production roles, and even directed more than 30 episodes for the flagship show. With the series wrapped, the 59-year-old reflected on directing the show’s final ever episode.
”I asked to direct the finale, but I believe that [showrunner] Angela [Kang] and Scott [M. Gimple, executive producer] already had every intention of having me do it, for a lot of reasons,” Nicotero says. Understandably, being tasked with directing the finale to wrap such an iconic show is a big one, and Nicotero says that he “felt the weight of pressure on me, and I’m proud of what we did.”
To bring the horror series across the finish line, after 11 seasons, and 177 episodes, Nicotero declared that he had put his “heart and soul into it. It was rough. I said to Norman [Reedus] one day, ‘Man, if I can make it through this, I can do anything. I can direct a Star Wars movie, I can direct anything that lands in front of me.’ I’m proud of it.”
