Tom Cruise’s Ramp Jump Hailed As Biggest In Cinema History

Next year, Mission: Impossible Dead Reckoning – Part One will land in cinemas and deliver arguably one of the biggest cinematic stunts realised on the silver screen. The studio behind the film has now revealed a nine-minute behind-the-scenes clip detailing how the stunt went from a concept to a death-defying reality. Fair warning, for those with a fear of heights, the footage below is not for the faint-hearted. Seriously, it’s pretty bonkers.

Shooting on location in Hellesylt, Norway, the stunt involves Tom Cruise riding a motorcycle off a ramp, over a cliff, before leaving the bike to perform a base jump. It’s been no easy task to bring the stunt from script to screen, which involved 13,000 motor-cross jumps, skydiving (30 a day, upwards of 500 skydives altogether), and multiple practices from a mock-up ramp.

As for the real thing, the ramp was constructed over several months in Norway, using helicopters to fly in the materials they’d need. On the first day of principal photography, Cruise successfully completes the stunt, much to the astonishment of the crew nervously observing the moment behind the monitors. The final product was hailed as “absolutely beautiful.”

Mission: Impossible Dead Reckoning – Part One will star Tom Cruise, Ving Rhames, Simon Pegg, Rebecca Ferguson, Vanessa Kirby, Henry Czerny, Esai Morales, Hayley Atwell, Pom Klementieff, Nick Offerman, Janet McTeer, and Shea Whigham.

The film is expected to debut in cinemas on Friday, 14th July 2023, before Mission Impossible 8, perhaps known as Dead Reckoning – Part 2, is scheduled to debut in cinemas on Friday, 28th June 2024.
