Thor: Love and Thunder Begins Filming On Australia Day

Thor: Love and Thunder has officially started filming and to celebrate the occasion, Chris Hemsworth and director Taika Waititi marked the moment on social media as part of Australia Day, the country’s national day celebrated annually on January 26.

An Instagram post shared by Hemsworth seen below is captioned: “A beautiful start to our shoot today with a Welcome to Country ceremony from the Gamay dancers of the Gadigal and Bidiagal Nation and performance and karakia by Maori dancers from Te Aranganui.”

January 26, as the post later adds, is seen as “a date signifying the beginning of dispossession, disease epidemics, frontier violence, destruction of culture, exploitation, abuse, separation of families and subjection to policies of extreme social control.”

“Let’s begin the healing and stand together in unity and support with our First Nations people with solidarity and compassion. Let’s find a date where all Australians can celebrate this beautiful country together.”

In a separate post by Waititi, he encouraged filmmakers “to engage with 1st nations peoples whenever shooting your films. It’s worth it and it’s the right thing to do.”

Thor: Love and Thunder is the fourth film in the series, and will close out Phase 4 of the MCU, following on from 2017’s Thor: Ragnarok. The film’s cast will include Natalie Portman as Jane Foster/Mighty Thor, last seen in Thor: The Dark World, Tessa Thompson as Valkyrie, Jamie Alexander’s Sif, and Guardians of the Galaxy’s Chris Pratt as Peter Quill/Star-Lord.

Plus, Christian Bale (American Psycho, Batman) was recently cast as Gorr the God Butcher.

Thor: Love and Thunder is due for release on February 18, 2022. Phase 4 will include Black Widow, Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, the untitled Spider-Man 3 sequel, and Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness.
