Russell T Davies Reassures Fans On Doctor Who’s Disney Deal

Russell T Davies, Doctor Who’s returning showrunner, has reassured fans concerned with Disney’s acquisition of the series internationally, deeming Doctor Who “absolutely the same show.”

In an interview with Doctor Who Magazine, courtesy of a report from Digital Spy, Davies discussed Disney’s acquisition of the distribution rights for the series outside of the UK. “I know people are, naturally, worried about American producers having notes on things. Well, don’t be. They’re giving excellent notes.”

“And I’m here to tell you, you haven’t watched a drama on British television in 20 years that hasn’t had American notes on it. Everything is a co-production… it’s really, completely normal.”

To further reassure fans, Davies hinted at the return of a villain last seen during William Hartnell’s era: Mavic Chen. Known as the Guardian of the Solar System, Chen allied himself with the Daleks during the 1965 serial The Daleks Master Plan. “And if you want any more reassurance, let me just tell you that we’re about to transmit the words ‘Mavic Chen’ on television for the first time since 1966,” Davies said. Could Chen be connected to the unknown antagonist played by Neil Patrick Harris?

Doctor Who returns to our televisions in November 2023 for three special episodes featuring David Tennant and Catherine Tate.
