Neil Patrick Harris has revealed that Ncuti Gatwa, the next incarnation of the Time Lord in Doctor Who, will be the first gay Doctor in the show’s history. Harris, best known for his work on It’s A Sin, promoted his new Netflix series Uncoupled on the Just For Variety Podcast – and at one point touched upon Gatwa’s upcoming role as the Fourteenth Doctor.
“I got to meet and interact with him a bit and he’s glorious,” the How I Met Your Mother actor said. He later confirmed that the 29-year-old actor, currently playing Eric in Sex Education, will be the show’s “first gay Doctor, which is going to be super cool, a sexier Doctor.”
Harris is currently starring in a new Netflix series, Uncoupled, by Darren Star and Jeffrey Richman. Harris plays Michael, a gay New York real estate agent whose partner Colin (Tuc Watkins) leaves him after a seventeen-year marriage. The cast includes Tisha Campbell, Emerson Brooks, Brooks Ashmanskas, Marcia Gay Harden, and André De Shields plays Michael’s neighbour, Jack.
Russell T. Davies, who succeeds current showrunner Chris Chibnall from 2023, recently teased fans that Harris would play “the greatest enemy the Doctor has ever faced.” Having worked with Harris on Channel 4’s acclaimed It’s A Sin, Davies hailed the 48-year-old as “a great actor, such a great man, it’s an honour and a hoot. Have fun!”
There’ll even be a new behind-the-scenes spin-off series to accompany Doctor Who from 2023. The series will offer exclusive material for fans on the writing, cast interviews, and special effects. A source says Davies believed “the time was right to bring back a behind-the-scenes show which will document their comebacks and show how the special was made.”
