According to a report by The Mirror, a new behind-the-scenes spin-off series will accompany Doctor Who from 2023. Commissioned by Russell T Davies, who’ll be returning to the sci-fi series as showrunner is reportedly called Doctor Who: Unleashed. The spin-off will air alongside the 60th-anniversary special – which features the return of David Tennant and Catherine Tate as the Tenth Doctor and Donna Noble, respectively.
Unleashed will follow in the footsteps of Doctor Who Confidential, a documentary series that accompanied Doctor Who from 2005 to 2011 – offering exclusive material for fans on the writing, cast interviews, and special effects. Steffan Powell, a TV journalist regularly featured on BBC Radio 1, will front the series.
“Russell is aware that Doctor Who fans can never get enough content when it comes to the show and how it is made, with David and Catherine making a sensational return to the show, he thought the time was right to bring back a behind-the-scenes show which will document their comebacks and show how the special was made.” a source says.
Since departing from Doctor Who in 2010, Russell T Davies is best known for acclaimed dramas Years And Years, A Very English Scandal, and It’s A Sin. Doctor Who’s current executive producer, Matt Strevens revealed details of Jodie Whittaker’s “massive feature-length epic” final episode.
Strevens, who departs the long-running science fiction show along with head writer Chris Chibnall and Jodie Whittaker in November, says the final episode “was huge to shoot – with lots of surprises for fans of all ages.” Jodie gets a really good send-off. I think it will push everybody’s buttons.”
“Jodie’s also very excited about who the next incumbent of the TARDIS is,” Strevens continues, adding: “It meant a lot to Jodie to know that she would regenerate – it’s lovely to pass that on.” For more Doctor Who content, take a look at Flickluster’s review for “Legend of the Sea Devils.”
