Following the conclusion of Ncuti Gatwa’s first season in Doctor Who, and a second season expected in 2025, fans of the long-running sci-fi series are eagerly awaiting news on a potential third season, with mainstay showrunner Russell T Davies giving his two cents on where things stand.
Speaking to SFX Magazine (courtesy of a story from GamesRadar), Davies remains cautious and suggests no decisions will be made until after Season 2 broadcasts. The writer describes it as “an industry decision” and that “like any business – these things take time. I think the decision will come after the transmission of season two. That’s what we’re expecting, that’s what we’ve always been heading towards.”
Season 2 of Doctor Who is expected to materialise at some point in early 2025, as an exact date has yet to be locked in. With Ncuti returning for a second run as the Fifteenth Doctor, he will be joined by Ruby Sunday (Millie Gibson), before new companion Belinda Chandra (Varada Sethu), who played Mundy Flynn in the Season 1 story Boom, steps in to the TARDIS.
Gibson exited the TARDIS and parted ways with the Doctor at the close of Season 1 in Empire of Death, but the former Coronation Street actress is expected to make a few more appearances next year.
Until then, we still have the 2024 Christmas Special, Joy to the World, to look forward to, starring Nicola Coughlan in an undisclosed guest role, with trains, Silurians, and a noisy fly. You can watch the trailer below.
A new audio drama series is in development featuring the writing talents of Matthew Jacobs, a writer responsible for one of the most talked about Doctor Who stories.
