Black Panther: Wakanda Forever Breaks New Box Office Record

Black Panther: Wakanda Forever has set a new box office milestone in 2022, becoming the first film this year to retain the number one spot at the domestic box office for four consecutive weekends, thanks to a report from Variety. Throughout the first week of December, the Ryan Coogler sequel secured another whopping $17.6 million to add to its impressive domestic total.

Wakanda Forever is set to become only the third film of 2022 to break $400 million at the domestic box office. Not bad going, all things considered. Plus, the sequel is the seventh highest-grossing film of the year. Compared to the original Black Panther film, which pulled in a staggering $1.4 billion at the worldwide box office, it’s unlikely Wakanda Forever will reach, and for that matter, trump the same milestone.

Currently, Tom Cruise’s Top Gun: Maverick takes the crown for the highest-grossing film of the year, and better yet, only the second film post-Covid to cross the $1 billion threshold at the worldwide box office, with Spider-Man: No Way Home occupying second place.

Ryan Coogler recently thanked fans for contributing to the sequel’s success, thanking those “who bought their tickets early and camped out opening weekend. Thank you to those of you (who) took their families out – young ones and elders in tow. To those who organised youth screenings and afterparties, who bought out theaters for communities and friends. To all of you who watched multiple times, and encouraged other folks to check it out.”

Black Panther: Wakanda Forever was released on November 11, 2022, and stars Letitia Wright, Tenoch Huerta, Michael B. Jordan, Dominique Thorne, Angela Bassett, and Danai Gurira.
