Mark Burg and Oren Koules, two mainstay producers with the Saw franchise, have shared their regrets over killing the Jigsaw Killer at such an early stage in the series. Played by Tobin Bell, John Kramer, otherwise known by the moniker Jigsaw, was killed off in Saw III.
“If I had to do it again, I might not have killed Tobin Bell in Saw 3,” Burg revealed in a recent interview with IndieWire, suggesting the decision to do so “might have been a mistake.”
The series would spawn another four films in his absence. Bell is now back in Saw X – which launches in cinemas today, and while it is the tenth film in the series, the film, from a chronological standpoint, comes in between Saw and Saw II.
The question lingering in the minds of audiences will be whether the makers will push out more flashback-laden prequel entries into the Saw series, expanding on the universe and giving us brand-new traps in the process.
“We’re superstitious, so we’ve never talked about the following Saw until the previous movie opens,” Burg said, suggesting that they would “sit down” and discuss options “if this movie works.”
“We left it open-ended, and I want to see what happens next,” he added.
Saw X follows a cancer-stricken Kramer as he travels to Mexico City to receive a potentially life-saving treatment from a group of specialist doctors. Despite his failing health, Kramer is soon concocting new traps after learning the doctors had duped him – and left him with months to live.
Saw X further stars Synnøve Macody Lund, Steven Brand, Renata Vaca, and Michael Beach. The Saw X director recently said he was hopeful for sequels.
