Rick and Morty Creator Had Talks About Making A Movie

Dan Harmon has been in conversation with Warner Bros about developing a film adaptation of Rick and Morty. Before the WGA strike, it was reported (H/T The Hollywood Reporter) that Harmon had had “a serious conversation” with Warner Bros over the prospect of a full-length Rick and Morty film.

“I’d have to check with my accountant, but it may be possible that the grand total of all these things is similar enough to the net of an overall deal that maybe I can finally go, ‘All right, that’s television, folks,’” Harmon told the outlet.

The concept was considered a “super episode” and in 2021, Scott Marder, a writer and producer on Rick and Morty suggested that the film could one day happen. “I do think it’ll happen, I do.” he said at the time.

Also known for his work on It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia, Marder described a potential film adaptation as “daunting. I wouldn’t be shocked if there’s one that comes down the pipe someday I feel like every episode is a movie. It’d have to be pretty epic.”

In 2021, Zack Snyder revealed his hopes of directing a Rick and Morty film (from NME). “I don’t have like a straight comedy that I can think, you know, that’s like wall to wall straight comedy,” the Justice League director said. “If I did the Rick And Morty movie that’s probably about the closest I’d get.”

Seasons 1-6 of Rick and Morty are available on Netflix in the UK. The series stars Dan Harmon, Spencer Grammer, Chris Parnell, Sarah Chalke and Kari Wahlgren. Rick and Morty Season 7 debuts on Adult Swim on October 15.
