Joker 2 Projected To Lose $200 Million In Box Office Disaster

Joker: Folie à Deux was perhaps the most anticipated sequel of the year, destined to follow in the footsteps of its acclaimed predecessor, a grounded, compelling character study that swooped through the box office and grossed over $1 billion, deservedly taking the crown for the highest-grossing R-rated film of all time.

That was until Deadpool & Wolverine knocked the film from the top spot in September, with director Todd Philips sharing his praise for the action superhero comedy on social media. Folie à Deux, however, with figures gathered by Variety, leaves this particular clown down in the dumps.

The sequel, an obscure musical featuring the return of Joaquin Phoenix as Arthur Fleck, with Lady Gaga joining as Lee Quinzel, pulled in a moderate profit of $51.5 million in domestic sales and in the space of two weeks, a handsome, yet far below projected, $165 million in global sales.

Unlike the original film, Joker had amassed $96.2 million domestically and $248.4 million globally after only three days post-release. Current projections for Folie à Deux are expected to cut off at $65 million domestically and $210 million to $215 million globally as the sequel wraps up its theatrical run.

Since the sequel burned through $200 million in production costs and almost $100 million for marketing and distribution, Folie à Deux is fated to become a box office disaster. In summary, according to insider information, the sequel is set to lose between $150 million and $200 million in its theatrical run.
