You read it right. Since the Borderlands adaptation tanked upon its theatrical release, Sad Alex, a musician with a Youtube channel and almost 140,000 subscribers, has now composed, quite brilliantly, a three-minute song sampling parts, or entire sentences, some verbatim, others revised, from the unfavorable reviews directed at the Borderlands film.
“The most underwhelming thing I’ve seen in my life, if it wasn’t for the nap on my girlfriend’s shoulder, would have been a massive waste of my time, cos my dream’s were actually kind of nice,” one line in the song reads.
“So go take a nap, go pet your cat, go stare at a wall, go on a shopping spree, or take a dancing class, go walk your pet fish, but don’t watch this hell, when you could be doing anything else,” another line goes.
Harsh. However, credit where it’s due, the song, backed by a piano, is surprisingly catchy. In fairness, the song isn’t composed of entirely negative reviews, since Sad Alex skilfully incorporates a quote praising Jack Black’s “decent” portrayal of Claptrap, who “did the best that he could.”
On Rotten Tomatoes, at the time of writing, the Borderlands adaptation has an approval rating among audiences of 53%, and alarmingly, a dismal 10% Tomatometer from a wider band of critics. These numbers may change with time, but for now, they reflect poorly.
“Come back Madame Web, all is forgiven,” Sad Alex sings later, referring to the shoddy box office performance of the recent Sony superhero flick starring Dakota Johnson as a clairvoyant paramedic. In comparison, Madame Web has an approval rating, among general ticket-paying audiences, of 57% on Rotten Tomatoes, and only an 11% Tomatometer rating.
Borderlands stars Cate Blanchett, Ariana Greenblatt, Gina Gershon, Jack Black, Bobby Lee, Kevin Hart, and Jamie Lee Curtis.
