The box office figures for the Borderlands adaptation make for grim viewing as the film’s theatrical run comes to an end. With figures reported by Forbes (via The Numbers), the Eli Roth-helmed action blockbuster opened in cinemas on August 9. In little more than a month, the box office numbers speak for themselves.
Borderlands, during its first Friday-Sunday weekend, having arrived in 3,125 cinemas throughout North America, pulled in a sum of $8.6 million. The final day of its theatrical run was last Thursday (September 5), with a summary total of $3,682, accounting for 178 cinemas.
In domestic sales, The Numbers report Borderlands profited a lowly $15.4 million, and $15.5 million internationally. The worldwide box office tally sits at $30.9 million. Variety reported that Borderlands, distributed by Lionsgate, was developed on a budget of $115 million. The costs for marketing and distribution reached $30 million.
On Rotten Tomatoes, at the time of writing, the Borderlands adaptation has an approval rating among audiences of 53% and a dismal 10% Tomatometer from a wider band of critics. These numbers may change with time, but for now, they reflect poorly.
Borderlands follows Cate Blanchett, who plays Lilith, a bounty hunter who returns to her home planet, Pandora, to find the missing daughter of space baron, Atlas (Edgar Ramírez). Her mission is soon sidetracked as she joins a group of adventurers exploring the planet for a vault said to contain untold treasures.
Borderlands stars further stars Ariana Greenblatt, Gina Gershon, Jack Black, Bobby Lee, Kevin Hart, and Jamie Lee Curtis.
