It’s good news for The Walking Dead fans – Andrew Lincoln will be reprising his role as Rick Grimes quite soon. The hit zombie horror drama held its last ever panel at yesterday’s San Diego Comic-Con – and revealed what the future holds for the Sheriff. Since his last appearance in Season 9, Lincoln will return alongside Danai Gurira, who plays Michonne, in a six-part limited series – as it was confirmed that plans for The Walking Dead film trilogy had been shelved.
The spin-off, described as “an epic love story of two characters changed by a changed world,” is expected to air in 2023 and has no official title. Gurira exited the series toward the back half of Season 10, finding evidence that Rick is still alive.
Lincoln and Gurira will serve as executive producers on the series, while Scott M. Gimple, who previously served as The Walking Dead showrunner through Seasons 4 to 8, will helm the spin-off. The two lead actors are described as being “actively involved” in the development of the untitled series.

In a statement, Gimple described their characters as “two of my favorite people and Danai and Andy are two of my favorite people.” He described working with them again as “a dream come true. The three of us, along with a terrific team of TWD all stars and incredible new voices, are crafting an insane love epic worth the long, long wait.”
“This has been the most extraordinary journey playing Rick Grimes for the best part of a decade.” Lincoln said. “I’m so excited to be returning to the screen as Rick, reuniting with Danai as Michonne, and bringing the fans an epic love story to add to the Walking Dead Universe.”
Gurira added: “Michonne and this TWD family has meant so much to me, and to continue the journey of these beloved characters, alongside Scott and Andy, both creatively and in front of the camera, and bringing The Walking Dead fans something truly special is just glorious. I can’t wait to pick up the katana again.”
