In what might be one of the year’s most disturbing horror concepts, A.A. Milne’s cuddly world of Winnie the Pooh just took a seriously dark turn. Look no further than a brand-new trailer for Winnie the Pooh: Blood and Honey. This is the pitch. Christopher Robin heads to college and establishes a life for himself away from the magical world of Hundred Acre Wood – effectively abandoning Winnie and Piglet in the process.
Robin returns to Hundred Acre Wood, and as established in its disturbing trailer, Winnie and Piglet are feral and out for revenge against Robin. While the footage for Blood and Honey ticks off every conceivable cliché in the slasher-horror book, from beautiful co-eds and a remote cabin besieged by murderous villains embarking on a violent rampage, A.A. Milne’s animated characters recently crossed over to the public domain.
Blood and Honey wrapped filming in August 2022, with director Rhys Waterfield’s gruesome take on a childhood classic causing an internet storm. Speaking about the film’s central villains, the film’s director Rhys Waterfield told Variety that since Robin’s abandonment “they’ve had to fend for themselves so much, they’ve essentially become feral.”
“So they’ve gone back to their animal roots. They’re no longer tame: they’re like a vicious bear and pig who want to go around and try and find prey.” Waterfield adds. Blood and Honey, at this stage, has no release date, and Waterfield disclosed that cinema-goers should not anticipate “a Hollywood-level production.”
“When you try and do a film like this, and it’s a really wacky concept, it’s very easy to go down a route where nothing is scary and it’s just really ridiculous and really, like, stupid. And we wanted to go between the two.” Waterfield continues.
Filmed on location in just ten days close to Ashdown Forest, the real-life inspiration for Milne’s story, Blood and Honey was produced by Jagged Edge Productions, which Waterfield runs with co-producer Scott Jeffrey. ITN Studios will distribute. The film stars Maria Taylor, Amber Doig-Thorne, and Danielle Scott.
