Stranger Things: Bob’s Death Was Once Completely Different

According to the writers of Stranger Things, Bob Newby’s death in Season 2 was once entirely different – and in a dark twist, his death would have involved a possessed version of Will Byers. According to the official writing team account on Twitter, the Duffer Brothers described the “crazy shit” that almost transpired in an earlier draft. The tweet is short on details but summarised with one sinister sentence that confirmed “a possessed Will was going to kill Bob.”

If one thing is certain, this narrative direction would have radically altered the series’ direction. In the end, as fans of the show will remember with heavy hearts, Bob (Sean Astin) met his demise in the Hawkins National Laboratory. He freed the Byers family and co by disabling the building’s security system, only to be killed by a Demogorgon right before making it to the exit. The feels are real, all these years later.

Undoubtedly, Bob’s death hit hard for fans, and whether it’d be death by Demogorgon or possessed Will Byers, the lasting impact would have been the same. Long live Bob. This is not the first time the beloved Netflix series has killed off fan favourites. One season later, during the Starcourt Mall showdown with the Mind Flayer, Billy (Dacre Kayd Montgomery-Harvey) met his fate in a fight with the monster.

The series pulled a cruel trick with Jim Hopper (David Harbour), following his supposed demise in the same episode, only to reveal he was alive the entire time and trapped in a Russian prison. Lastly, how could we forget the head of the Hellfire Club, Eddie Munson (Joseph Quinn), in Season 4, whose selfless sacrifice and memorable Metallica performance assisted in the fight against Vecna?.

Stranger Things stars Mille Bobby Brown, Winona Ryder, David Harbour, Finn Wolfhard, Noah Schnapp, Caleb McLaughlin, Sadie Sink, Gaten Matarazzo, Joe Keery, Natalia Dyer, Maya Hawke, and Charlie Heaton.
