The Bespin Bulletin has reported that Mary Elizabeth Winstead (Scott Pilgrim and 10 Cloverfield Lane) will play Hera Syndulla in the upcoming Ahsoka mini-series.
Syndulla is a Twi’lek revolutionary first seen in Star Wars: Rebels, where she captained and piloted for the Ghost crew. Since then, Syndulla led the rebellion against the empire and fought in the Empire’s last stand during the Battle of Jakku. She has appeared in numerous spin-offs, comics, books and was even mentioned in Rogue One: A Star Wars Story.
Few details are known of the character’s involvement and the series’ story as a whole, the Ahsoka series will be helmed by Clone Wars writer/director Dave Filoni and will see Ahsoka Tano (Rosario Dawson) ‘investigate an emerging threat to a vulnerable galaxy’. Set after the fall of the empire, Ahsoka will see the return of a host of Rebels alumni, with Winstead starring alongside Natasha Liu Bordizzo (Guns Akimbo) as the Mandolorian warrior Sabine Wren and Eman Esfandi (King Richard) as Ezra Bridger, the Padawan and freedom fighter. Hayden Christensen will also be returning to his role as Anakin Skywalker, with fans wondering if (or when) Ahsoka will have a final confrontation with Darth Vader to put a bow on their friendship, mentorship and Ahsoka’s journey.
As for the still unknown cast members, Ray Stevenson (Vikings) is speculated by fans to be playing the Lasat compatriot of Hera Syndulla, Garazeb “Zeb” Orrelios. And Ivanna Sakhno (High Fidelity) is reportedly playing an original character codenamed “Astrid” but whose true name has been kept under wraps.
Ahsoka wrapped filming only last month and is slated for a Disney+ exclusive release in 2023, with it speculated to follow the release of The Mandalorian Season 3 on March 1st to pace the year’s Star Wars releases.
