Lego Star Wars Holiday Special Coming This November

The original 1978 Star Wars Holiday Special holds a unique place within the beloved science fiction franchise. The bizarre variety show-like format, the inexplicable guest appearances from the likes of Bea Arthur and Jefferson Starship, and the focus on Chewbacca’s entire family of hairy, grunting Wookiees led to this special becoming one of the worst-rated and poorest-received pieces of Star Wars media of all times. However, the infamously bad special’s lack of re-broadcast or home video release has given the Holiday Special an almost cult-like status among Star Wars fans due to how difficult it is to obtain and view a copy.

Now, the team behind the LEGO Star Wars video games and TV series have officially announced that they are producing a Holiday Special of their very own. Simply titled The LEGO Star Wars Holiday Special, this TV experience will release on November 17 exclusively for streaming service Disney+.

The brand new Holiday Special will star the cast of the most recent trilogy of films – including Rey, Finn, Poe, Rose, and, of course, the adorable rolling droid BB-8 – as they celebrate the Wookiee holiday Life Day alongside their friend Chewbacca. (Life Day was the same holiday Chewie had hoped to spend with his family during the original Special). During the preparations, Rey and BB-8 will find themselves sucked into a “cross-dimensional adventure,” where they will encounter characters from previous Star Wars films including Darth Vader and Obi-Wan Kenobi.

Currently, only a few actors have been announced to reprise their roles in the Holiday Special, most notably Kelly Marie Tran as Rose and Anthony Daniels as C-3PO. As of today, Billy Dee Williams is also confirmed to be returning as Lando Calrissian, a character who had not previously been mentioned as appearing in the special. What role Lando will play is currently unknown.
