The BBC has revealed the first look at Jonathan Groff in costume for his upcoming role in the new series of Doctor Who. The images, as relayed on Twitter, tease that the 38-year-old actor will appear alongside Ncuti Gatwa’s Fifteenth Doctor and his companion Ruby Sunday (Millie Gibson) in a period piece.
“Dress to impress, and beware the Duchess…” the Twitter post is captioned, alluding to a potential villain for the new series. Groff gained recognition for his role as Jesse in the musical comedy-drama Glee.
More recently, he featured as Eric in M. Night Shyamalan’s Knock at the Cabin and Holden Ford in Mindhunter. For younger audiences, Groff provided voice-overs in the Frozen franchise. In a statement, Groff said joining Doctor Who left him “thrilled to jump into the extraordinary mind of Russell T Davies and watch the incredible Ncuti Gatwa soar in this iconic role!”
