The live-action remake of Disney’s iconic Snow White has opened to $87.3 million globally after its worldwide launch at the end of the last week. The budget of the movie was over $270 million, with several factors influencing its production including a fire on set and the 2023 SAG-AFTRA strike, in which the lead star Rachel Zegler participated prominently. This is a particularly disappointing opening, with only $43 million coming from the domestic US box office.
Movies typically earn more from their domestic box office, as the international box offices have different approaches to revenue splits along with other operational costs. As reported by Deadline, this opening puts it a little below Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire domestic opening of $45 million, and that film itself wasn’t such a success. It trails behind other live action Disney hits, such as Cinderella (2015) and The Little Mermaid (2023), with the latter in the mid $90 million area for its debut, despite online toxicity regarding the movie.

Despite the initial wave of feedback being positive after press screenings and social media posts were allowed, there’s been a mostly negative consensus from critics against the film. It currently sits at a 44% on Rotten Tomatoes with all critics, and a 28% from ‘Top Critics’. The verified audience counter is fresh at 74%, but the ‘all audiences’ tab is much harsher at 23% – likely due to spamming from controversy surrounding the film. With such a middling opening box office, and little positive word of mouth from critics, it seems unlikely Snow White will gather the steam needing to make anything close to a profit, but we’ll keep tracking it.
