Deadpool & Wolverine beckoned audiences back into the multiverse with more variants of our titular characters ever seen before – from Lady Deadpool and Dogpool to a Crucified Wolverine, Patch, and the Cavillrine (played by Henry Cavill).
With so much source material to mine from, the editors behind the action superhero comedy, Dean Zimmerman and Shane Reid, who recently disclosed details on why Gambit was cut from a post-credits scene, talked about the variants cut from the threequel, and the eye-watering sum of money behind Hugh Jackman’s brown-and-tan classic comic book suit.
“There was a whole bunch of [variants]. One of the storyboard artists, he was a huge comic book fan and he gave us a list of 10 of them… There were so many,” Zimmerman explained in an interview with ComicBookMovie.com’s Josh Wilding.
Zimmerman cited “time and budget issues” as a reason why so many variants were axed from the film. “Here’s a perfect example: that brown and tan [suit], we spent about $100,000 building that. They’re expensive…” Zimmerman added.
The editor later revealed that the team “had to get a little economical” with the resources afforded to them. Often, they would resort to a less is more approach, requesting Jackman to remove his shirt and “be bolted to a cross” to recreate iconic Wolverine variants.
“They were all thought out, but they were also done with a budget in mind and also time – once we resumed shooting, our deadline on this movie was so tight.”
Inspired by comic book writer John Byrne’s X-Men tenure, the film features Jackman in the suit ready to fight the Hulk as Deadpool searches for a multiverse variant of the clawed mutant.
Deadpool & Wolverine is set to arrive on 4K Ultra HD, Blu-Ray, and DVD a few weeks later on October 22.
