Avatar 2’s Title Has Been Revealed

The first Avatar sequel has its title, and we can expect to see the first teaser trailer. Avatar: The Way of Water will be released on December 16, 2022, over a decade since the first film. As for the first teaser, Marvel fans will be pleased to hear that they can catch the debut trailer alongside Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness on May 6.

Disney unveiled the announcement at CinemaCon with exclusive footage of the film. The preview reportedly shows returning protagonists Jake Sully (Sam Worthington) and Neytiri (Zoe Saldana) riding the mountain banshees from the first film and whale-like creatures above dazzling blue water.

Disney has also released a brief synopsis of what we can expect as we head back to Pandora: “Set more than a decade after the events of the first film, Avatar: The Way of Water begins to tell the story of the Sully family (Jake, Neytiri, and their kids), the trouble that follows them, the lengths they go to keep each other safe, the battles they fight to stay alive, and the tragedies they endure.”

Of interest, in the same release, Disney confirmed the following cast members are also returning to Avatar: The Way of Water: Sigourney Weaver, whose character Dr. Grace Augustine met her demise in the first film, Stephen Lang, whose formidable antagonist Colonel Miles Quaritch also met his end by the time the credits rolled, Joel David Moore as Dr. Norm Spellman, CCH Pounder as Mo’at, and Giovanni Ribisi as Parker Selfridge.

New to the cast are Cliff Curtis (Fear The Walking Dead), Edie Falco (The Sopranos), Jemaine Clement (Flight of the Conchords), and Kate Winslet (Titanic). James Cameron will be returning to direct and produce the film alongside Jon LandauIt as another producer. It’s also worthwhile keeping in mind that there are still Avatar 3, 4, and 5 to come as the franchise expands.

Can’t remember much about the first film since its release in 2009? The good news is Avatar will be re-released in cinemas on September 23.
