Annapurna Acquire TV and Film Rights For Alan Wake and Control

Annapurna Pictures will finance half of the development budget for Control 2 in return for the TV and film rights to Control and Alan Wake, building a “strategic partnership agreement” with Remedy Entertainment to “expand” the franchises across film and television formats.

Annapurna Pictures, which is adapting Stray into a film, will take over Alan Wake after the rights held by AMC expired. Remedy confirmed they had “moved on from AMC amicably as their rights to Alan Wake expired.”

“The future of storytelling requires seamlessly integrating gaming, film, and television, and this partnership will allow us to explore new ways of bringing these narratives to life,” Megan Ellison, the founder and CEO of Annapurna, said in a statement. “By leveraging Remedy’s innovative narratives and immersive worlds, we can push the boundaries of how stories are told and experienced across mediums.”

The CEO of Remedy Entertainment, Teri Virtala said the agreement would “ensure we can develop Control 2 into the best game possible, allow us to move into self-publishing for selected titles, and expand our franchises to other mediums.”

With both Alan Wake and Control set inside the same in-game universe, Annapurna Pictures has countless opportunities to explore how future adaptations will translate into television and film. Developed by Remedy Entertainment, Alan Wake 2 was released on October 27, 2023, and published by Epic Games. The sequel is available on the PS5, Xbox Series X and S, and PC.

Control was released in 2019 for the PS4, Xbox One, and PC before next-gen upgrades for the PS5 and Xbox Series X/S launched in 2021.
