Wandavision Creator Steps Down From Vision Spin-Off

Jac Schaeffer, the creator behind Wandavision, will not be returning for the standalone Vision series, expected to debut in 2026. After Variety exclusively revealed in May that Terry Matalas, known for his work on Star Trek: Picard, would be stepping in as showrunner for Vision (featuring a reprising role for Paul Bettany), Schaeffer has now confirmed (via ComicBook) that she’ll be stepping back from the spin-off, which picks up from the events after Wandavision.

“I so wish them well,” Schaeffer said. She described Paul Bettany, who first appeared as Vision in Avengers: Age of Ultron in 2015, as a “dear friend” and “an extraordinary person. He owns this character, so I’m not involved, but I’m entirely rooting for it.”

With 2026 mapped on the MCU radar, plot details for the synthezoid-centric spin-off are under wraps, but the hope remains that Elisabeth Olsen will in some shape or form, reprise her role as the Scarlet Witch, despite seemingly being killed off during the events of Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness.

Matalas picked up an WGA nomination for his work on the third season of Picard, and has won the approval of Marvel President Kevin Feige. His other work includes 12 Monkeys on Syfy and has writing credits on Star Trek: Enterprise and Nikita.

Next up from the MCU is Agatha All Along, an extension to the Wandavision story, featuring the return of Kathryn Hahn as the titular witch. The series stars Joe Locke, Sasheer Zamata, Ali Ahn, Maria Dizzia, Paul Adelstein, Miles Gutierrez-Riley, Okwui Okpokwasili, Debra Jo Rupp, Patti LuPone, and Aubrey Plaza.

Agatha All Along debuts on Disney+ on September 18.
