The fourth and final season of Superman & Lois is set to return to our screens in October, closing out the last of The CW’s DC-related superhero programmes. Starring Tyler Hoechlin and Bitsie Tulloch in the titular roles, the showrunners teased a “pretty significant character” to appear in the early half of the last season.
Speaking to TVLine, Todd Helbing and Brent Fletcher were vague in their comments but had this to say: “There is a pretty significant character from the comics that we were actually surprised that we were able to use — and it’s pretty soon in the season,” they explained. “You hear the name drop, then start hearing that name drop more, and then you see that person eventually.”
Odds are this “name drop” will be referring to someone other than Tom Cavanagh, known for his work on The CW’s The Flash. The 60-year-old actor recently revealed at a Fan Expo in Philadelphia that he would be appearing in the finale for Superman & Lois. The identity of his character remains unknown.

“The finale for Superman & Lois was taken up already, and so I said, ‘Well, I’m happy to not do it,’“ Cavanagh said on the panel. “[Showrunner] Todd [Helbing] was like, ‘Well, would you play a role?‘ So that’s coming up for those of you that watch Superman & Lois, something that I’m happy to have done.”
During the San Diego Comic-Con panel this year, Helbing confirmed that the final season would feature more cameos “than any other season” and feature Cavanagh, which he defined as “the easiest casting of all time.”
Superman & Lois Season 4 returns with a two-episode premiere on October 17, 2024.
