Excitement is growing among horror films as more and more returning actors and characters are being announced for the upcoming Scream film. This film, currently tentatively titled Scream 5, will be the fifth installment of the popular slasher franchise dealing with the many individuals taking on the mantle of the masked killer “Ghostface”. Currently scheduled for release in January 2022, this film will debut nine years after the previous installment (2011’s Scream 4, which achieved only middling success at the box office) and just over twenty-five years after the very first film, the now beloved 1996 cult classic Scream.
Previously, actor David Arquette had become the first confirmed cast member to be returning for the movie, announcing that he was reprising his role as small town lawman (and seasoned Ghostface survivor) Dwight “Dewey” Riley. Shortly after, Courteney Cox made an announcement that she was also returning as reporter Gale Weathers. Lastly, Marley Shelton will be reprising the role of Judy Hicks, Riley’s deputy who played a major role in Scream 4.
However, one major question remained: would Neve Campbell be returning as Sidney Prescott, the series’ central character and the prime target of the multiple incarnations of Ghostface? On September 10, Campbell confirmed to horror news source Bloody Disgusting that she would indeed be returning. She praised the film’s directors – Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett, also known as Radio Silence, who also co-directed the 2019 horror comedy Ready or Not – and discussed her admiration for the series’ original creator, Wes Craven, who passed away from brain cancer in 2015.
Campbell shared news of her return with fans via her official Instagram account.
Principal photography for the upcoming Scream film is expected to begin later this year in Wilmington, North Carolina. More information regarding the film, its cast and its story will hopefully be revealed as it enters production.
