You read that right. Last week, FlickLuster confirmed that a sequel to Joker was in development, with the working title Joker: Folie à Deux attached to the project. Well, the plot thickens, as according to an exclusive report from The Hollywood Reporter, Joker 2 may be taking a new direction with pop icon Lady Gaga joining the cast.
Sources have told the publication that Gaga is in talks to be involved with the film, but details on her character are under wraps. The working title, Folie à Deux, refers to a shared madness between two people. It’s also a psychosis or delusion shared by two close people simultaneously.
It isn’t a stretch to speculate that Gaga may play Harley Quinn (whom the Joker shares an on and off-again abusive relationship with). It’s even more telling when considering the similarities in appearance Gaga shares with Quinn. But it gets wilder, as the sources have also told The Hollywood Reporter that the sequel is a musical.
While this could seem like a shot in the dark, it’s worth noting that Joker and Joker 2 director Todd Phillips also produced the A Star Is Born remake which starred Lady Gaga opposite Bradley Cooper. A musical would be a stark contrast to the gritty, gloomy, and dark 2019 movie. However, if Joker 2 is a musical, it could go down the Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street route.
The Instagram post, as seen above, announcing the news of Joker: Folie à Deux, shared by Phillips, teased the script with the working title of Joker: Folie à Deux, which further confirmed that he and co-writer Scott Silver would be writing the sequel. The other image in the post revealed Joaquin Phoenix reading the script.
