Vince Gilligan On Kim’s Scene With *That* Cameo Appearance

Big spoilers ahead for the penultimate episode of Better Call Saul Season 6. In an interview with Rolling Stone, Saul’s co-creator Vince Gilligan revealed details of a scene featuring Kim Wexler (Rhea Seehorn) and a cameo from Jesse Pinkman (Aaron Paul).

During the interview, Gilligan was pitched the question on how the scene came to be – which bought together Kim Wexler and Jesse Pinkman outside Saul’s office. Straight out of the gate, Gilligan expressed his love for the two characters, adding that it was “as simple as that. We try to tell these stories as organically as possible, and we do.”

The scene is a pivotal moment as it brings together Kim and Jesse for the first and likely only time in the history of the show. Despite his reluctance to admit it, Gilligan explains that the scene was “pleasurable to write, pleasurable to direct.”

“It doesn’t really move the plot forward. In strict, organic storytelling terms, it’s not “necessary.” But it just was fun.” the 55-year-old writer and director adds: “I think we all wanted — I can’t remember who came up with the idea — that we wanted to see those two worlds collide. We couldn’t help ourselves.”

As previously mentioned, Gilligan directed the penultimate episode, “Waterworks,” which marked the final time he would work with Rhea Seehorn. However – the episode marks the second appearance of Aaron Paul’s former high school student turned meth dealer, Jesse Pinkman. Paul, alongside Bryan Cranston, made cameo appearances in the previous episode – titled Breaking Bad.”

If you’re not up to date with Better Call Saul, all five seasons and all twelve episodes of Season 6 are available on Netflix. Better Call Saul stars Bob Odenkirk, Jonathan Banks, Rhea Seehorn, Patrick Fabian, Michael Mando, Tony Dalton, and Giancarlo Esposito.
