Director duo Joe and Anthony Russo are set to return for the next pair of Avengers films in the Marvel Cinematic Universe with Avengers: Doomsday (2026) and the follow-up Avengers: Secret Wars (2027). The Russo Brothers past work in the MCU made a big name for themselves, with hits like Captain America: Civil War (2016) and of course Avengers: Infinity War (2018) and Avengers: Endgame (2019). After the success of their previous work, The Playlist podcast ‘The Discourse’ put forth the question on everyone’s mind – why return now?

“We definitely try to – I mean, we did so many of those movies in a row that you sort of forget about the pressure. The job is so all-encompassing and so intense that you can’t really think about, ‘Well, what are people going to feel or think about this?’ All you can think about is, ‘Is this a good story that we want to tell or not? Why are we doing it?’ […] We’re exclusively focused on the storytelling right now, and that’s the thing that brought us back – an idea for a story where we went, ‘that’s a really, really interesting story to tell.’ And now we’re just focused on executing that idea. Pressure and fear usually make for very poor decision-making. So hopefully we just stay calm and keep making the stories the way we like to see them.”
That’s a big quote, but the key takeaway is in the phrase “we’re exclusively focused on the storytelling […] and that’s the thing that brought us back”. They describe the upcoming Doom-centric Avengers films as having a “really interesting story to tell”, and their passion for a good story explains their return. That said, we’re also sure Marvel offered them a great payday too!
Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars are investing a lot on returning talent. From the confirmed return of Robert Downey Jr. now playing Doctor Doom to the Russo Brothers directing, and even rumblings of a potential Chris Evans return as Captain America; Marvel is looking to recreate the hype for their movies, and hopefully their box office too.
