Review: The Falcon and The Winter Soldier, Episode 4 – “The Whole World Is Watching”

John Walker, the world’s new Captain America. The hero everyone needs after Steve Rogers. That didn’t last long. Truth be told, there are few more haunting sights than Walker holding Cap’s iconic shield covered in blood. Beginning this review from the end, the closing moments of The Whole World is Watching, are certainly the highlights of not only Episode 4, but perhaps the entire series thus far. There was a growing feeling since John Walker’s debut that the new Captain America could never fill the boots of his predecessor, the world’s first Avenger.

Walker’s partner, Hoskins, or otherwise known as Battlestar (doubt many of us will remember him by the end of the series), is killed by The Flag Smashers’ leader Karli Morgenthau. An enraged Walker hunts down the members of the group who flee, before savagely killing a Flag Smasher (ironically a member of the group who idolised the original Cap growing up) with his shield.

To add a rather large spanner to the works, Walker bludgeons him to death with his shield in a busy Latvian town square full of witnesses. Safe to say, it’s unlikely Walker will be able to redeem himself in the eyes of the world as the next Captain America. Worse of all, Walker was able to retrieve the remaining vial of Super Soldier Serum, but unlike the man that came before, it’s doubtful the serum will have the same effect on Walker as it did Rogers.

Elsewhere, we’ve got the Wakandans. Led by Ayo, a member of the all-female Dora Milaje. Hot on the tails of Bucky and Sam, the Dora Milaje are after Zemo for his role in killing King T’Chaka during the events of Captain America: Civil War. The action sequences in Zemo’s Latvian apartment are worthy of high praise, while Zemo himself is predictably up to no good. It was never going to last, and before long he’s pulling off what Sam describes as an “El Chapo”, fleeing via an underground tunnel beneath a bathtub.

While there were no dancing Zemo this week, we do learn that he’s fond of Turkish Delights. With two episodes remaining, The Falcon and The Winter Soldier is setting an exciting, if slightly muddled stage with Walker, Zemo, Morgenthau, and her Flag Smashers, and the as yet unseen ‘Power Broker’, all in play.

It’ll be a tall order for Bucky and Sam to bring all of this under control, but it’ll be hugely entertaining to watch. If you’re all caught up with The Falcon and The Winter Soldier, and you want a little more, then make sure to check out Flickluster’s review series of Episodes 1-3
