Michael C. Hall has provided an update on the Dexter revival series. Speaking to The Daily Beast, Hall described the original series finale as “unsatisfying”, describing the new limited ten-episode run as a story “worth telling in a way that other proposals didn’t, and I think enough time has passed where it’s become intriguing in a way that it wasn’t before,”
Hall will reprise his role as Miami Metro’s blood-spatter analyst, Dexter Morgan, who moonlights as a serial killer by night.
Critical reaction to “Remember The Monsters”, Dexter’s eighth season finale in 2013, was highly divisive. Hall says “there’s always been a hope that a story would emerge that would be worth telling. I include myself in the group of people that wondered, ‘What the hell happened to that guy?’ So I’m excited to step back into it. I’ve never had that experience of playing a character this many years on.”
Hall defended his titular character, describing Dexter’s actions at the end as “justifiable”, adding that “some of the criticisms were about that, and some of the criticisms weren’t so much about the ‘what’ as they were about the ‘how,’ and those were valid too.”
“We certainly do live in an era where the bar is very high as far as the simultaneous surprise, satisfaction, and closure that should go along with a series finale.”
As reported last October, the co-president of entertainment at Showtime, Gary Levine, described Dexter as “such a special series”, adding that they’d “only revisit this unique character if we could find a creative take that was truly worthy of the brilliant, original series.
“Well, I am happy to report that Clyde Phillips and Michael C. Hall have found it, and we can’t wait to shoot it and show it to the world.”
The Dexter revival enters production in early 2021 and is due to air at some point in autumn 2021.
