The first impressions of Heretic, the upcoming A24 horror thriller starring Hugh Grant, are in, and feedback from the Toronto International Film Festival premiere are overwhelmingly positive.
Hugh Grant has received acclaim from critics for his portrayal as Mr. Reed in the film, directed by Scott Beck and Bryan Woods, the writing team behind A Quiet Place and directors of Haunt. “It is genius how the script perfectly balances humor, terror, and dogma. I am going to be thinking about this film for a long time,” Lauren Bradshaw writes.
Heretic, co-starring Sophie Thatcher (of Yellowjackets’ fame) and Chloe East (The Fabelmans), was described as “thrilling from start to finish” by Aryan P, praising “pretty electric performances” while highlighting Grant as “unsettling.”

Perri Nemiroff, a senior producer with Collider, hailed Heretic as a “mighty impressive performance showcase. Yup, it is just as much fun watching Hugh Grant veer hard into dark and twisted territory as you’d hope.”
“Two young missionaries are forced to prove their faith when they knock on the wrong door and are greeted by a diabolical Mr. Reed (Grant), becoming ensnared in his deadly game of cat-and-mouse,” a synopsis from A24 reads (via GamesRadar).
Heretic, scheduled to reach cinemas on November 22, 2024, also stars Elle McKinnon, Stephanie Lavigne, Elle Young, River Codack, Elle Young, Haylie Hansen, and Carolyn Adair.
