Hayley Atwell on Captain Carter’s Death In Doctor Strange 2

MCU spoilers in this story. Hayley Atwell has reflected on her tenure as Peggy Carter in the MCU, which culminated in the death of her multiverse variant, Captain Carter, during the events of Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, admitting that she “would definitely like her to have more to do.”

Speaking to Digital Spy, the 40-year-old actress talked about her time in the franchise, which recently included a stint in What If…?, and admitted that Captain Carter’s demise “was definitely not, you know, the trajectory that I see for Peggy.”

Atwell said her future within the MCU would be conditional on what Marvel and the audiences want to see. However, the actress had not ruled out a return in the future. “It’s so funny, because, you know, I did that 10 years ago, and I love her because I love the people, and you never know…”

Outside of Marvel, Atwell has run up a list of credits to her name, including Black MirrorChristopher Robin, and The Sweeney. In 2023, Atwell is due to star in the seventh Mission Impossible film. Atwell says Peggy’s character, first introduced in 2011’s Captain America: The First Avenger, is “not mine anymore.”

“She lives in the world of people that have taken her into their heart. And that’s beautiful. But it’s kind of like: yeah, you can’t control the impact a particular role has on the rest of the world.”

Speaking at Awesome Con in Washington D.C in June, as reported by FlickLuster, Atwell described the role as “the most incredible opportunity to hone my particular craft in this franchise.”
