A sequel to Five Nights at Freddy’s is set to begin filming at the end of the month, as reported by Collider. The location for the new film has yet to be disclosed, while speculation leans toward New Orleans, the setting for the first film. Adapted from the video game series, the film grossed just shy of $300 million during its theatrical run ($297,144,130, thanks to data accumulated by The Numbers).
In August, Scott Cawthon, the creative mind behind the FNAF franchise, shared four pages of a script to tease fans of the general direction the sequel could take, with plot details and wider casting details a secret.
The second FNAF game was a prequel, implying the next live-action film could follow a similar path and explore William Afton’s backstory (portrayed by Matthew Lillard). Also known for the live-action Scooby-Doo films and the original Scream, Lillard is set to reprise his role alongside Josh Hutcherson (The Hunger Games).
In an Instagram post shared by Lillard in May, the actor confirmed that the sequel would drop in cinemas by December 2025. “I ALWAYS COME BACK,” he captions the post. Speaking to the Editor-in-chief of Collider, Steve Weintraub, in January, Hutcherson discussed what was next for his character:
“We’re all patiently waiting. I mean, look, I think that they have a lot to figure out as far as where to take the story because there’s a lot of options based on the various formats of the game and story and lore. So, I think they’re kind of trying to nail down exactly which avenue they’re gonna proceed down, and then we’ll get to shooting.”
Released on October 27, 2023, Five Nights at Freddy’s was directed by Emma Tammi and stars Elizabeth Lail and Mary Stuart Masterson. The film features a wealth of cameos from YouTube personalities such as MatPat, CoryxKenshin, Dawko, and 8-BitRyan.
In other video-game adaptation news, the final box office numbers for Borderlands are in.
