Doctor Who: Showrunner Admits “We Don’t Know What’s Happening”

It has been a rough few weeks for Doctor Who fans. After the recent series finale gave more questions than answers, and showed signs of some serious rewrites and deviations from the schedule, we’re now at a point where the future of Doctor Who is beyond even the TARDIS’ power. After speculating online, fans finally have some information from showrunner Russell T Davies thanks to a new interview that leaked a little early from the official Doctor Who Magazine – and it’s not good news.

In his ending quote, Davies confirms “we don’t know what’s happening yet” in regards to the show’s “potential futures” which are, at the time of writing, still completely undecided. Fans have not been happy with how the latest season seemed to mess up its many big reveals, with a wasted return of the Rani also followed by a strange conclusion for the storylines of Ruby Sunday and Belinda Chandra, and then ending with the baffling return of Billie Piper seemingly in the role of the Doctor.

With no confirmed future for the show, the casting of Billie Piper as (seemingly) the Doctor is eyebrow-raising.

It has been one mess after the other, and Davies’ latest statement confirms neither the BBC nor their production partners at Disney have decided what to do next. Whilst nothing is confirmed, this does seem to guarantee we won’t be getting a Doctor Who Christmas special this year, given the lack of time the team would even have to create something. If the BBC does decide to renew, then it will likely be 2027 at the absolute earliest that we can expect to see the return of the Doctor – and whoever is going to play them in the next series.

What did you think of the most recent season of Doctor Who, and what do you want to see when, and if, it returns? Let us know your theories in the comments down below, and maybe even your hopes for the future direction the show takes behind the scenes as well.
