Doctor Who 60th: David Tennant & Catherine Tate Return

David Tennant and Catherine Tate will be returning to Doctor Who for next year’s 60th-anniversary special, courtesy of the BBC. Filming for the 60th-anniversary episode is already underway and expected to premiere in 2023, with both Tennant and Tate involved in the production.

Tate, who first appeared as Donna Noble in 2006’s The Runaway Bride, later appeared as the companion alongside Tennant for Series 4 in 2008. After exiting the series in the same year, she reprised her role two years later in Tennant’s swan-song two-parter, The End Of Time. It marks the first time the two have shared the screen in more than ten years. Tennant and Tate will be working alongside former showrunner Russell T. Davies, who’ll be taking over as showrunner from 2023.

Speaking about the upcoming 60th-anniversary episode, Davies teased fans that it could be “a missing story. Or a parallel world. Or a dream, or a trick, or a flashback.” The Years and Years writer promised, however, that it will be “spectacular, as two of our greatest stars reunite for the battle of a lifetime.”

Tennant previously appeared in Doctor Who’s 50th anniversary alongside Matt Smith and John Hurt in 2013. At this stage, plot details of their return remain unclear, but Tennant will likely reprise his role as the Tenth Doctor alongside a score of previous incarnations. Unlike the Time Lord, Tate’s story as Donna Noble was considerably less open-ended following her final appearance over a decade ago.

Jodie Whittaker’s Thirteenth Doctor and current showrunner Chris Chibnall will depart from the series following the Centenary Special, due to air in November 2022. It was recently reported by FlickLuster that Ncuti Gatwa would replace Jodie Whittaker as the next Time Lord.
