With greying, slicked-back hair, a moustache, and shades to block out the sun, Patrick Dempsey (Scream 3, Thanksgiving), looks nearly unrecognisable in his latest role – starring alongside Sarah Michelle Gellar (Buffy the Vampire Slayer), in Dexter: Original Sin.
These first exclusive photos (via Entertainment Weekly) set the scene for the prequel series and Dexter Morgan (Patrick Gibson) as he embarks on a forensics internship at Miami Metro PD in the 1990s, pre-serial killer days. While Gibson plays him on-screen, Michael C. Hall returns to the franchise to serve as Dexter’s inner voice.
Dempsey plays Captain Aaron Spencer, and Gellar takes on the role of Tanya Martin, a CSI Chief, describing her as “a very different kind of character” than those she’s portrayed before, someone whose had to “work harder to get where she is than everybody else there.”
“In the early ’90s it was very rare to have a female head of a department, let alone a female head of a department at Miami Metro,” Gellar says. “So she has to be really tough and a little bit one of the guys to be able to have made it that far and have thick skin.”
“It’s fun to sort of inadvertently be the character that teaches Dexter everything that he needs to know to really be a good serial killer, but all the while not knowing that you’re doing it,” Gellar explains.
Discussing the character he plays, Spencer has a “brotherhood” with Harry Morgan, Dexter’s adopted father. “They’ve come up together. Aaron turns to Harry because he trusts him the most. And Aaron has a lot of respect within the group because of his wisdom and his humility,” Dempsey says.
Dexter: Original Sin is slated to arrive on Paramount+ in December 2024.
