Charlie Cox On Call For MCU Role: “I thought it was a joke”

Spoilers ahead for Marvel stuff. Charlie Cox, best known for his portrayal as Matt Murdock/Daredevil in the MCU, has revealed how a phone call from Marvel to reprise his role as Daredevil was written off by the actor as a joke. During the call, Cox believed it was a joke, telling CinePop that he thought “it was a prank.”

“Then I thought maybe – I had an answer machine message saying, ‘Kevin Feige’s assistant, can you call us back?’ And then I thought maybe it was a charity event for Covid and they’re bringing everyone in,” the Kin and Stardust actor continued. During the call, the actor was then asked if he’d want to reprise his role as Murdock in Spider-Man: No Way Home, which he described as “bonkers.”

“I’m in the garden in my house, and my wife is sitting on the steps, looking at me like, ‘What’s happening?’ It was mad, it’s just nuts. It’s a childhood dream, it was unbelievable.” Cox added. The 39-year-old British actor played Matt Murdock in the Netflix Daredevil series for three years before it was cancelled in November 2018.

Surprising not only himself but Marvel fans, Cox made a fleeting cameo in Spider-Man: No Way Home last year, serving as Peter Parker’s lawyer. Cox has since made a long-awaited appearance in She-Hulk, and an 18-episode Daredevil series is expected to debut in 2024.

Cox is also booked to appear alongside Daredevil co-star Vincent D’Onofrio in the Hawkeye spin-off Echo. D’Onofrio reprised his role as the villainous Kingpin in Hawkeye last December. It’s fair to say he’ll have a busy schedule going forward.

All eight episodes of She-Hulk: Attorney At Law are available to stream on Disney+, and all three seasons of Daredevil, including a wealth of other Marvel TV series, are available on the platform.
