Cars Spin-Off Series Races Onto Disney+ For September 8

Cars TV series will be heading to Disney+Cars on the Road, a spin-off to the film franchise, will feature Owen Wilson and Larry the Cable Guy reprising their voice roles as Lightning McQueen and Mater the Tow Truck. The story will follow McQueen joining Mater as they head east from Radiator Springs on a cross-country road trip to attend his sister’s wedding.

The outrageously daft trailer sees McQueen and Mater meet a monster truck called Ivy, attend a circus, a car-themed Jurassic Park dubbed the Cartaceous Gardens, Mad Max: Fury Road-inspired races in the deserts, and a maze of tyres. Watch the trailer further below.

One of the series’ directors, Steve Purcell, has described Cars on the Road as “a romp across the country with Lightning McQueen and Mater.” He adds: “Like any real road trip, every day is a new mini-adventure with unexpected twists and turns.”

Cars on the Road is produced by Marc Sondheimer. Steve Purcell, Bobby Podesta, and Brian Fee serve as directors, with Jake Monaco composing the score for all nine episodes. Cars on the Road premieres on Disney Plus on September 8.

Cars on the Road will premiere on Disney+ Day, an entire day to celebrate the platform with new shows, films, and specials. The D23 expo will launch immediately after Disney+ Day — meaning fans can expect a wealth of more Disney-related stuff going into the remainder of the year.

The original Cars film in 2006 followed Lightning McQueen, an ambitious hotshot racing car who becomes stranded in Radiator Springs. Despite his selfish commitment to arriving in California to win the Piston Cup and secure a racing deal with Dinoco, McQueen discovers the importance of love and friendship.

In Cars 2 (2011), Mater becomes caught up with spies and espionage as McQueen competes in the World Grand Prix. Cars 3, the most poignant film in the series, focuses on Doc Hudson’s legacy as McQueen fights to maintain his position among a new generation of race cars.
